Birdcages

Bird cages

Because there are many different types of bird cages available, one needs to do proper homework before actually buying one...

Ensure that the material being used for the birdcages don't pose a safety hazard for the birds. As most of the birdcages are powder-coated with zinc or lead in them, which is unsafe for the bird, these should be avoided. Some manufacturers have consulted with veterinarians and have determined a safe level for both these minerals so that the bird is not harmed.

Ensure that  the cage is big enough for the bird - the bigger the cage, the happier the bird! The general rule here is that the bigger the cage, the better, as long as the bar spacing isn't too wide.

Cleaning cages is one thing you have to be ready to do when buying a birdcage. That's why it is so important that the cage can be broken down easily for cleaning. One also has to look for drainage holes in the cage at points where moisture usually collects (often the bottom of each panel). The main reason for the cleaning of the cage is because the bird droppings can become erosive; the longer they are on the cage, the more damage they do.

Because birds need space and light, one should avoid placing the birdcage in a tight spot in your home. That's why it is always better to buy cages with wheels to move the cage, thus giving the bird a change of scenery. Make sure the bars of the cage are not hollow, as any decent bird can bend and chew through a hollow birdcage, therefore it should be constructed of steel or wrought iron.

TODAY'S NEWS:

This column was supposed to be about birds. About how the nice folks at Francis Beidler National Forest in Harleyville are catching them, studying them, marking them and then releasing them back into the wild in the hopes of learning how to better protect them in the future.

Birds are out of the nest and on the move. It's the time of year when young birds, many in short-lived plumages, beg parents for food, while at the same time the first migrants arrive, often inconspicuously, among the local nesters.

CORSICANA – The SPCA of Texas has been awarded custody of the 154 fighting birds rescued under the authority of the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department.

Remember to check the birdcage for functional features, like a bird proof lock, before buying it. If the locks are not right, just imagine the state of the house if the bird gets out and roams though the house, leaving all its droppings everywhere. Keep these points in mind, the next time you want to buy a bird cage.
