Birdfeeders

Birdfeeders

These structures allow you to place seeds and other types of birdfeed to attract and feed the birds in the surrounding area.

Birdfeeders come in two different types - hanging and stationary. Hanging birdfeeders are usually hung in trees and are more convenient as they can be placed anywhere. Stationary birdfeeders are also found in two types - those that are attached to a tree and those that are perched on a pole.

A secluded spot many trees is the most convenient for nailing the birdfeeder to a trunk. On the other hand, if there are few trees, the pole type comes in handy. There are also many varieties available, when it comes to the materials that can be used for the birdfeeders, e.g. wood, plastic, metal, glass and stone. For most people the most popular one is the wooden birdfeeder, as it blends with the woodland scenery.

When you find that birds repeatedly return to the birdfeeder, it is assumed that they use it as their primary feeding source. If this is the case, keep it full at all times by replenishing it at least once a day. The ground below the birdfeeder will be full of seeds and droppings, so choose your spot wisely and to ensure the safety of your visitors, make sure that the birdfeeder is secure.

TODAY'S NEWS:

This column was supposed to be about birds. About how the nice folks at Francis Beidler National Forest in Harleyville are catching them, studying them, marking them and then releasing them back into the wild in the hopes of learning how to better protect them in the future.

Birds are out of the nest and on the move. It's the time of year when young birds, many in short-lived plumages, beg parents for food, while at the same time the first migrants arrive, often inconspicuously, among the local nesters.

CORSICANA – The SPCA of Texas has been awarded custody of the 154 fighting birds rescued under the authority of the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department.

Also remember that hanging birdfeeders tend to swing on windy days and should thus be checked regularly. The birds may be injured or killed when it falls. Don't neglect the fitted birdfeeder to ensure the happy return of your feathered friends.
